In children and teenagers, steroids can sometimes cause growth to slow down, so they’ll need to have their height checked regularly. If growth is slowed, they might be referred to a specialist doctor for advice. Corticosteroids (‘steroids’) are a group of powerful anti-inflammatory drugs that are used frequently to treat lameness problems. Although there are a number of different chemicals available, we most frequently use triamcinolone acetonide (‘Adcortyl’) and methylprednisolone acetate (‘Depo-Medrone’). Never use steroids without a prescription from your vet, they can be harmful if used incorrectly. Alcohol

When alcohol interacts with this system, it begins to lower the levels of testosterone and oestrogen levels increase. This, in turn, means the body becomes prone to storing fat and losing muscle mass, reducing the effectiveness of steroids altogether. However, when combined, some medications can intensify the “buzz” that alcohol produces. The same can apply to mixing alcohol and steroids, and most of the time, the implications aren’t considered.

Taking too many steroid tablets over a long period can make you more likely to get side effects. You’re most likely to be prescribed oral steroids if you have a flare-up of your symptoms or an asthma attack.

What are steroids used for in MS?

Make sure any change to your dose of steroid is updated on the card. You won’t be able to have steroid creams or gels if you have an infection that affects your skin. Some other skin problems, such as rosacea, acne and ulcers, can be made worse by steroid creams so you might not be able to take them if you have any of these conditions. They’re also known as corticosteroids, and are different to anabolic steroids used by bodybuilders and athletes.
